Construction Induction (Red/White Card) Training

What is the Construction (OH&S Induction) Card?

The Construction Induction Card (CIC) training establishes general, industry-wide OH&S training and is a requirement for all people who work on construction sites, both domestic and commercial. The training was established by unions, employer associations, the Victorian Workcover Authority and the Office of the Chief Electrical Inspector and finalized by the Victorian Construction Industry Induction Training Agreement in January 2001. As of 1st July 2008, all red cards are issued through WorkSafe, however training will continue to be carried out by the CFMEU on their behalf.

You will be required to bring photo identification to the course.  At the end of the training, the CFMEU will issue you with a Statement of Attainment for CPCCOHS1001A Work Safely in the Construction Industry.

What does the course cover?

The objective of the training is to provide workers with an overview of basic OH&S principles and legislation, an understanding of hazards, risks and control measures, emergency procedures and an introduction to industry schemes and agreements. As the training is competency-based, workers will be required to complete assessment tasks demonstrating basic awareness of health and safety in the construction industry.

Who needs to do the course?

Everyone who is on any site in Victoria needs a Red Card (except for those working in an emergency capacity). This includes people doing both work experience and apprenticeships.

But I already have my Red Card?

If you currently hold a valid Red Card you will not be required to re-take the course. These changes apply only to those who are being inducted for the first time.

How can I make a booking?

To make a booking you will need to fill out an application form and return it to the CFMEU with the total cost of the course, $150.

Upon receipt of payment the CFMEU will issue you with a training date as well as a tax invoice/receipt known as a pink card. This will allow you to work supervised on site for 28 days only. This is the maximum time allowed between booking and completing the training.

Nominal hours:  6

Call (03) 9341 3458 to request an application form.

On the day

The trainer must verify your identification through the checking of photo I.D. as requested by WorkSafe.

Upon successful completion of the training, you will be issued a Statement of Attainment.  This will allow you to work unsupervised on site for 60 days.  As the card will be issued by WorkSafe, any changes of address, concerns or queries relating to the issuing of the card will need to be directed to WorkSafe.
