First Aid Courses

Level 2 First Aid tickets issued by the CFMEU are valid for three years with a CPR update to be undertaken every year. First Aiders holding CFMEU Advanced Occupational First Aid tickets are required to maintain their Level 2 First Aid ticket and attend an Advanced Occupational Resuscitation update every year. Refresher courses to maintain First Aid Tickets are to be undertaken every three years.

Level 2 First Aid

Topics include:  resuscitation, communicable diseases, shock, wound management, burns, medical conditions, musculo-skeletal injuries, poisons, bites and stings, codes of practice, critical incident stress, drug and alcohol policy.

Course in Advanced Occupational First Aid for Building and Construction (Level 3+)

This course was developed to meet the needs of workers in relation to first aid practice, and offers skills required by the workplace First Aid Post Controller.

It comprises 4 units, covering emergency life-support skills and other first aid procedures and skills, including the use of oxygen and defibrillation. It has been written for industry, using the building and construction industry as an example.

The Course in Advanced Occupational First Aid incorporates Building and Construction Industry National Competency Standards. Workers wanting to do the Course in Advanced Occupational First Aid must have a current CFMEU Level 2 First Aid ticket (or equivalent) and have undertaken the RPL process.

Topics covered include: defibrillation, oxygen, the role of the First Aid Post Controller, confined space awareness, anatomy, self-harm, statistics, law, triage, medications, and material safety data sheets.

CPR (Update)

Australian Resuscitation Council policy

It is recommended that all workplace First Aiders participate in a CPR update every 12 months. This course has been developed as a refresher, and covers basic resuscitation procedure.

Nominal hours: 6 (average 4 hours)

Level 2 First Aid (Refresher)

Workers who want to keep a current Level 2 First Aid ticket from the CFMEU are required to complete the Level 2 First Aid refresher every three years. This refresher course reviews all skills required by the workplace First Aider and provides updates on relevant legislation and first aid techniques.

Advanced Occupational Resuscitation (Update)

Australian Resuscitation Council policy

This course was developed as a CPR, oxygen and defibrillation resuscitation update. Workers qualified in the use of oxygen and defibrillation must participate in a recommended refresher course at least every 12 months.

Course in Advanced Occupational First Aid (Refresher)

Workers who want to keep a current Advanced First Aid ticket from the CFMEU are required to complete the Advanced Occupational First Aid Refresher every three years.

This refresher course reviews all skills required by the workplace First Aid Post Controller and provides updates on relevant legislation and first aid techniques. The refresher course is 2 days duration.
