Cantilevered Chariot Causes Fatal Fall

A worker fell seven storeys into the street and died when the cantilevered chariot he was working on tipped over on a Hickory site in South Melbourne on Januaury 15.
The chariot responsible for the acccident was similar to the one pictured and its use had previously been banned by the CFMEU site steward. He was on leave at the time of the accident.
The CFMEU has now imposed a ban on the use of cantilevered chariots and the use of any chariot within three metres of any edge where a fall of two metres or greater exists.
Any work that is required to be undertaken on balconies or edges of buildings should be done behind purposefully designed and engineered screens, or perimeter or external scaffold.
For full details of the ban and correct procedures for working at heights on the edge of buildings read the CFMEU OHS Alert.
