United Steelworkers return favour to CFMEU
In a fine example of international solidarity, Canada's United Steelworkers have put the wind up multinational construction products company Jeld-Wen.
In September the CFMEU's Construction and Furnishing Trades divisions organised a rowdy reception for greedy Canadian boss Tony Kirwan when he addressed a Melbourne business conference. Kirwan is trying to force USW members employed by his firm Alumicor to cop a six year wage freeze. The workers have taken him on and been on strike since March.
On October 4 United Steelworkers occupied the Jeld-Wen display at the Greenbuild 2011 International Conference in Toronto. The multinational construction products supplier owns Corinthian Doors and Stegbar Windows, two Australian based subsidiaries currently trying to force rubbish wage deals onto workers.
CFMEU Furnishing Trades Division members at both companies are resisting Jeld-Wen's push. Corinthian workers have been locked out and recently voted to reject the the company's lousy pay offer.
