Thousands march to remember those who died at work and for removal of ABCC

Ten thousand workers from the construction industry marched from Trades Hall in Carlton to the office of Workplace Relations Minister Julia Gillard today, Thursday April 28, to protest the rising number of deaths in the construction industry.

Ark Tribe gets rousing reception at shop stewards meeting

Ark Tribe received a rousing reception at the April shop stewards meeting, where he talked about his upcoming trial. He is charged with refusing an ABCC interview and faces six months jail if convicted.

“This fight isn’t about me or you, it’s about us and the kids who come behind us,” he declared. “I never thought I’d see the day when hard working Australians would face jail for sticking up for their rights.”

CFMEU Helps Build Opposition to NT Intervention

The CFMEU is backing the Alyawarr community in protest at the Northern Territory intervention.

Throughout February CFMEU members have been labouring with locals under the desert sun to construct a community centre.

CFMEU-Backed Basketballers Crowned National Champs

Victoria Metro took out the 2010 Ivor Burge National Basketball Championship held in Gawler, South Australia February 20-27. This made it a hatrick of titles for the team, following success in 2008 and 2009.

This year the CFMEU helped the boys get kitted out and the union logo was seen on the winners podium.

Congratulations to all the players and their support team, including coach, CFMEU member Garry Barker.

Insulation Debacle due to Training Failure

The CFMEU was saying a year ago that training requirements for the Federal Government's insulation roll out were inadeqaute. They were also warned of the dangers of using foil insulation.

Tragically we have been proven correct and now the government and employers must act to make sure no more lives are lost.

It was the always the CFMEU's position that training should be completed by every worker involved, not just one supervisor per contractor.
